Barro, Curated by Alejandra Rojas

RRASP Hosting Barro, an exhibition showcasing clay works by Latin American artists
One Eyed Studios Rockella Space Member Alejandra Rojas is co-curating a special exhibition for the 2024 Brooklyn Ceramic Arts Tour and Ridgewood Open Studios featuring work by Fernanda Urbibe, Alejandra Rojas, and Gonzalo Miñano.
The exhibition “Barro” highlights Latin American artists in Brooklyn, featuring sculptural works that celebrate identity, culture, and expression, while centering a curated table as a metaphor for gathering and storytelling through art.
The exhibition aims to spotlight the work of Latin American artists currently residing and working in Brooklyn. Rojas, a Peruvian immigrant and architect, channels her passion for design into sculptural clay creations. Uribe, a Brooklyn-based artist, blends her Mexican-Cuban identity with ancient inspirations in her sculptures and paintings. Miñano, a Peruvian visual artist based in New York, explores themes of gender identity, religion, death, and pleasure in his evocative pieces.

The title, Barro, was chosen to celebrate the Spanish language, particularly the distinct and challenging pronunciation of the double ‘R.’ Centered in the space is a curated table, reflecting a significant element in Latin American culture. It embodies the heart of gatherings, where cooking, conversations, and familial bonds thrive. This table serves as a metaphor, inviting the pieces and their narratives to take center stage, encouraging dialogue and expression.
Covered with earth, the table symbolizes the malleability of the material to convey thoughts, visions, and ideas. Its design offers a 360-degree view of the artworks, revealing intricate details waiting to be discovered. We invite you to immerse yourself in Barro, exploring its richness from every angle.
The exhibition was part of the Brooklyn Ceramic Art Tour 2024 and Ridgewood Open Studios 2024. On the closing week of the exhibit the curators hosted a Talk with the Artists and Moderator, Veneranda Aguirre.
